Thanks to Valentine’s Day falling squarely in the middle of February, the month is most commonly associated with flowers and romance — an irony when you consider how bitterly cold the month is for much of the world. That’s not the case in Belize. Since this miniature Central American country is wedged right beside the Equator, the climate and weather are pleasantly subtropical throughout the year. In fact, it’s one of the best times to visit since it sits in the tail end of the tourist season after the December crowds have mostly thinned out. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or just an excuse to flee the cold, here’s what there is to do in this Caribbean paradise in February.
Dive at the Belize Barrier Reef
With a length of nearly 200 miles, the Belize Barrier Reef is the second-largest ecosystem of its type in the world — and experienced scuba divers have dozens of worthwhile dive sites in and near the reef itself. There’s obviously a lot to see here, as the ecosystem is home to roughly 1,400 species. The private island resort of Ray Caye offers a dive shop to get you geared up as well as lessons to get you prepared even if you’ve never dived before. Or you can always rent a scuba scooter to explore even further and faster.
Break Out the Snorkels
Snorkeling offers a less intensive and intimidating approach to exploring the ecosystems lurking beneath the surface of the Caribbean Sea, and the rich life around Ray Caye and the reef means that you can often just step out into the water and find plenty to see. But there are a number of parks that are well worth venturing to on a snorkeling expedition. Gladden Split is an especially popular site, and it’s possible to even catch a glimpse of rare loggerhead turtles there.
Fish the Waters of the Caribbean
Fishing on the coasts and caves of Belize are just as flexible as snorkeling. It’s easy to rent a fishing boat and set out in search of dinner on the deep sea, but you’re also likely to find luck just standing over the pier with a rod and some bait. Bonefish, permit, and tarpon are in season and especially prevalent throughout the month of February. And the kitchens at most resorts will be happy to throw your freshly caught fish right on the grill for you.
Celebrate the Season of Love
Exclusive resorts like Ray Caye offer a true sense of privacy and isolation with high-end amenities and limited amounts of guests at a time. That makes Belize the perfect place to go when you want to simply enjoy some time alone in paradise with that special someone but still have private chefs, masseuses, and concierges right within reach. Ray Caye offers the perfect combination of luxury and privacy. And if you’re looking for a venue for your wedding, renting this private island is more affordable than you might think.
