At Ray Caye we firmly believe the crowning glory to a great vacation is great cuisine. The Lionfish Bar and Grill, with its informal and relaxed setting, provides the most idyllic spot for our two wonderful chefs, Cristobal Hernandez and Aron Haran, and their team to share their passion for food. In the Belizean tradition, their desire to please and make our visitors welcome comes from the heart – as does their cooking.
Ray Caye is proud of what our kitchen team achieves day in and day out, especially with all the challenges that being 19 miles offshore presents, and wanted to share with you two of our kitchen kings, and their stories.
Cris is 23 years old and grew up on a farm in Belize. He has always had an interest in where our food comes from, and new ingredients. He started cooking professionally when he was sixteen years old, working his way up to the position of chef at the tender age of 21. Cris was identified a potential star within our group and last year travelled to a sister property in Madeira, to broaden his horizons. His great strength is that he has a fantastic palate, and wants to eat all the food he makes! This genuine passion shines through in his flavor combinations and attention to detail.
At 34 years, Aron is the elder statesman of the pair, with a CV to match. He already has seventeen years experience to call on, working his way up from prep chef. In 2007, he was named the first Belizean chef at Francis Ford Coppola’s Turtle Inn Resort in Placencia. Three years later, his talent so impressed a VIP guest that he was invited to Italy to work both as a private chef, and later at the Sin Restaurant and Lounge, where he was exposed to new products and ideas, and added traditional Italian cuisine to his repertoire. In 2015, the call of home and family, lured Aron back to Belize and we were fortunate to be able to offer him a position alongside Cris.
